Why You Need to Get Rid of Your Drug Store Skin Care Products
I can clearly remember using Sea Breeze, Noxzema, and Neutrogena back in the 80's. If it burned and made my skin feel like skeletor, I thought it was working. I didn't care for Ten-O-Six either from Bonne Bell. It smelled weird.
Back to the dry, tight, burn your face off feeling. Little did I know, every product I was using was completely wrong for my skin. Drying it out after cleansing was telling me the pH of the product was too acidic.
Danish biochemist Soren Sorensen invented the pH scale for measuring the acidity of a substance in 1909. The pH scale is a measure of the acidity and alkalinity of a substance. This measurement scale is essential for all skin care products, and for you.
Products on the shelves at Walgreens do not come with a pH scale guide. Why would they? Mass produced products are designed to appeal to the masses and are not interesting or designed for better care of your skin in mind.
After using your cleanser, how does your skin feel? Dry, tight, oily? Are you reaching frantically for the moisturizer? Do you skip the moisturizer?
This is a clear indication your cleanser is not pH balanced and is stripping your skin of its natural oils. So much to the point of making your skin freak out and produce more oil and maybe acne.
Having an education in esthetics gives me the tools to properly guide my clients to a streamlined skin care routine. It is simple, but are you doing more harm than good? Most likely yes. Do not fret - consult with your favorite esthetician. We have way more guidance to offer than just a blog post. ;-)
